Our Bibles are timeless sources of guidance for all of us. Our Bibles offer us moral principles and teachings from Christ Himself. What God teaches us through His actions and the actions of His Son are beliefs and behaviors we base our lives around and strive to follow. When it comes to the concept of self-defense, some people have questioned its alignment with our Christian values. These individuals have even gone so far as to ask me “how can I be a Christian and not feel morally convicted teaching and using self-defense techniques”. I have been told I lack faith in God because I don’t depend on Him to protect me. I simply say, “if we don’t need to protect ourselves because God will protect us, then we don’t need to evangelize because God will save everyone”. Let’s take a closer look at Luke 22:35-38 and get some insight into the importance of self-defense in certain circumstances.
Examining the Passage:
1. Practical Preparedness: In this passage, Jesus emphasizes the importance of practical preparedness. By instructing His disciples to carry a moneybag, knapsack, and even a sword, He acknowledges the need for self-reliance in certain situations. This does not imply a rejection of faith but rather a recognition of the realities of the world.

Fulfillment of Scripture: Jesus mentions that the disciples carrying swords fulfills the scripture that speaks of Him being “numbered with the transgressors.” This indicates that there are times when followers of Christ may find themselves in challenging situations where self-defense becomes a necessity.

While trust in God is paramount, it doesn’t negate the responsibility to take reasonable steps to ensure one’s safety. When you know what to look for you are one step ahead of the person looking to cause harm and or chaos. In this blog we’ll explore key strategies and tips on how to spot a public threat.
1. Be Observant:
The first and foremost step in identifying public threats is to be observant of your surroundings (situational awareness). Pay attention to the people, the environment, and any unusual activities. If you have read my previous blogs, then you know about situational awareness and how crucial it is. Trust your instincts; if something feels off, it’s worth investigation further.
2. Unattended Items:
One common indicator of a potential threat is unattended items in public spaces. Be wary of abandoned bags, backpacks, or packages. If you notice something suspicious, report it to the authorities immediately. Don’t worry about feeling stupid or what other people might think, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
3. Behavioral Cues:
Pay attention to the behavior of individuals around you. Look for signs of nervousness, agitation, or erratic movements. Be cautious of people who appear to be studying a location, taking photographs in a way that seems unusual, or exhibiting behaviors that deviate from the norm. In the aftermath of mass shootings or even bombings, when interviewed, people who were right bgy the shooter, explosive device, (and survived) remembered something seemed off about someone or something.
4. Inconsistencies in Dress or Appearance:
While it’s important not to judge based on appearances alone, certain inconsistencies in dress or appearance may raise concerns. Look for individuals who may be overdressed for the weather, wearing bulky clothing that seems out of place (like a winter jacket in the middle of July) or refusing to make eye contact.
5. Overly Protective or Defensive Behavior:
Individuals exhibiting overly protective or defensive behavior in public spaces may be cause for concern. This includes those who are unusually focused on securing a specific area or seem to be guarding an object or location. Trust your instincts and report such behavior to authorities again don’t worry about what people may think or may say, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
6. Communication Signs:
Pay attention to verbal and non-verbal communication. Individuals engaged in suspicious activities may use coded language, speak in hushed tones, or avoid eye contact. Be alert to signs of communication that don’t align with the context of the situation. I would also like to point out that people who are deaf or hard of hearing use sign language to communicate. You have to keep this in mind and watch the individuals communicating. If you can’t speak sign language at least know what it looks like to you don’t confuse a simple conversation with a threat of ill intentions.
7. Surveillance Awareness:
Be mindful of individuals who appear to be conducting surveillance. This could involve prolonged or repeated observation of a location, mapping out escape routes, or seemingly documenting security measures. If you notice such activities, report them promptly. Watch people taking photos of the same background but from different angles. Typically, tourists will take a photo or two from one location not several. Think of it this way: if you’re at the Capitol building with your family you will probably take a photo of the building from the front and a couple inside. You would not take fifteen photos of the front, sides, and back of the building, all form different angles maybe not even focusing on any one person.
8. Crowd Dynamics:
Understanding the dynamics of crowds is essential. Be aware of sudden shifts in crowd behavior, such as panic, a rapid dispersal, or an unusual convergence towards a specific point. These can be indicators of a potential threat or emergency situation. Observation and situational awareness go hand in hand. Realistic training involves simulation of these scenarios to the best of your ability, incorporating elements such as surprise attacks, multiple assailants, and confined spaces, and weapons that may be used as well like knife, gun, bat, tire iron. While you cannot prepare for every situation and every scenario, training this way ensures that individuals are better prepared to respond effectively when faced with a genuine threat.
2. Stress Inoculation: The human body’s response to stress is a crucial factor in self-defense. Realistic training exposes individuals to controlled stressors, mimicking the physiological and psychological reactions experienced during an actual confrontation. If you train with someone pointing a firearm, knife, club, or other weapon at you or using it on you, then you are better prepared and have a better understanding of how you will react.

This muscle memory can be a lifesaver when fine motor skills are compromised under stress, as it enables individuals to execute defensive actions instinctively. Get used to talking with your hands or having your hand up above your waist. This way you’re ready to respond if need be. If you keep your hands in your pockets or by your waist, then your reaction time is cut down and you are not prepared to defend yourself.
4. Adapting to the Unpredictable: No two self-defense situations are identical. Realistic training emphasizes adaptability by presenting diverse challenges. Whether it’s defending against armed attackers or navigating unfamiliar terrain, individuals trained in a realistic setting are better equipped to assess and respond to the unique demands of each situation. A good training scenario might be as follows: have your attacker drop their weapon and someone else who is playing a bystander pick up the weapon. What are you going to do? What is they bystander going to do? Should you have gone for the weapon? Realistically you need to go for the weapon and get control of it. If you are not training this way, then you need to start. Start running all kinds of scenarios and remember if you have to defend yourself against a knife you are going to get cut. I will repeat that YOU WILL GET CUT! Once you have this mindset and practice this (don’t really cut yourself) you will be better prepared and equipped to defend yourself and the ones you love. Keep this in mind if you have to defend yourself from someone with a firearm. The firearm will go off maybe a couple times. You need to be prepared for the noise. Now do not train with live rounds in a firearm but maybe train with a loud cap gun to get used to the noise. After that move onto an airsoft gun so you know if you are getting hit. I want you to train as realistic as possible while maintaining a safe environment.

1. Crisis Decision-Making: Self-defense often demands rapid decision-making under duress. Realistic training hones an individual’s ability to assess threats, evaluate options, and make split-second decisions. This mental preparedness is as crucial as physical skills when it comes to effective self-defense. By training in the realistic methods above you will be able to make split second decisions much better than someone who hasn’t trained in real-world scenarios.
2. Confidence and Composure: Realistic training instills a sense of confidence derived from facing and overcoming simulated challenges. This confidence is not brash or overconfident but is grounded in the knowledge that one has practiced and prepared for a variety of situations. Maintaining composure under stress is a valuable asset in self-defense. Think of airplane pilots, they have to train for all kinds of scenarios, and they can never train for them all. Like Captain Chelsey Burnett “Sully” Sullenberger the III. Sully is a retired American fighter pilot, and airline pilot who is best known for his actions in 2009 while flying US Airways. His flight 1549 had both engines disabled by a bird strike and he had to ditch the plane in the Hudson River. All 155 people on board the plane survived because of his actions. Now Sully did not train for this exact incident but because he had trained on similar incidents, he knew exactly what to do. Sully was able to stay calm, cool, and collected under pressure. You need to make sure you are training properly so you can keep your composure and have confidence under pressure.

You don’t want a utility belt full of stuff weighing you down just in case something happens. You need to choose what you are going to carry, some poelple carry five items while others carry seven or eight. It depends on where you work, where you may travel, what you may encounter, what you are trained to do in an emergency (CPR, First Aid), and what you feel comfortable doing. Everyday items you may be but not limited to:
· Gun
· Knife
· Flashlight
· Pepper spray
· Tactical Pen
· Self-Defense Key Chain
· Whistle
· Handcuffs or Zip Ties
· Tourniquet
· Phone

I’m not going to carry a tourniquet unless I know how to use one and I’m comfortable using it.

You need to be able to change your EDC depending on what you might do any given day.
· If I’m going to the courthouse or my kids school for anything and I usually carry a gun, knife, and pepper spray, then I’m not going to take those items into a federal building or school where it’s against the law. I need to adjust my EDC depending on that task. If I’m going to leave items in my car, do I have a way to secure them so someone can’t break into my vehicle and steal them?
· If I decide to go on a hike my EDC changes a little. I may add or subtract some items. I may want to add a first aid kit. How big is it going to be and where will I carry it. If I’m in bear country, what size bear spray am I going to carry and where will I carry it. I want to make sure my firearm and bear spray are easily accessible.
· If I’m working security, I need to keep in mind what scenarios I might encounter. This will help me decide what I want to take away from my EDC or add to my EDC. I have worked on, and lead church security teams and I always add handcuffs and zip ties to my EDC on Sundays. Hopefully I never have to restrain someone until the police arrive, but if I need to I am able to do so.
5. Mindfulness and Intentionality:
